Advice and links for new owners

Dogs are wonderful pets and companions but if they are to behave well, relieve your stress (rather than increase it) and remain fit and healthy they need the best start in life.  So it is worth getting it right and spending a little time doing some research.  It is all too easy to fall for the idea of a puppy without understanding the implications.  This site and this page should help.

Here you will find everything you need to know about buying and finding a puppy that will suit you.

There is a great deal of very good advice in books and on the Internet but here we have tried to bring together websites we know to be reliable.

If you are starting entirely from scratch you could not do better than take a course.  The Animal Care College provides one which is FREE and designed for the family to complete together.

The National Register of Pedigree Dog Breeders supports the Kennel Club's Assured Breeders Scheme ABS.  It has very high standards and if you can source your puppy through it you can be sure that the breeder has cared for and socialised your puppy properly, will provide all the necessary paperwork and be available for help and advice.

There is information about every breed and excellent advice on all aspects of buying a puppy from the Kennel Club too.

If you really want to get into the detail then you can download the RSPCA's Puppy Information Pack.  This has been endorsed by several of the major charities including Dogs Trust, the British Veterinary Association and the PDSA among others.  It is laid out very well and provides a great deal of useful information.
