breeding CV   We are an assured KC breeder and a 5 star licensed breeder with Redcar and Cleveland Council. I have been breeding Coton de Tulears for 4 decades. I only have 1-2 litters per year.

Other Info   I am the breed health coordinator for the Coton de Tulear Club. I have studied the health of the Coton de Tulear since 2002 sending breeders a health form which they fill out to tell me of what problems they have experienced with in the breed. Over the years we noticed IVDD becoming more prevalent so research is still being conducted to the seriousness of the issue.. There is a test for chondrodystrophy (cddy) which can help breeding programs. All my breeding dogs are clear of the cddy gene (CFA18 FGF4 & CFA12 FGF4) making them less susceptible to IVDD. My breeding dogs are clear of all testable health conditions for the Coton de Tulear at the present time. The Coton is a chondrodysplasia (dwarf breed) so susceptible to the dreaded Queen Ann legs which affect 40 other breeds of dogs. I breed for straight legs as so many of the chondrodysplasia breeds can have angular limb deformity (ALD). The structure and movement of the dog is extremely important to my breeding and can be missed under the cotons coat. If the dog moves with effortless grace the structure must be correct.
We have shown cotons in the show ring since 1998. Our first Coton won top import register a number of times. We have a few top puppies awards and have owned & bred international champions. I’ve always been a little reluctant to allow my puppies to be sold as show dogs, preferring the pet owners. In 2018 i let an exhibitor have a puppy. He won top puppy 2020 and he’s top male dog this year beaten by a bitch for over all top dog of the year honours. I have allowed a few other Cotons to go to exhibitors now and will look forward to seeing those in the ring too . I find selling to exhibitors very nerve racking as I only want the best examples of the breed with my affix on. I measure their legs, body & head from birth making sure their structure is with in the correct breed proportion. If at 10 weeks I think they won’t be good enough i will not allow them to go in the show ring. There are many things on a Coton that needs ticking to make a show dog as well as structure, temperament, confidence & eagerness to learn, there is also pigmentations. The Coton is predominantly a white breed so suffers from the fading pigmentation (Dudley nose) like all white breeds. I can tell which of the puppies will retain their noses and which won’t. I have a background in animal health & education and I am also a fully qualified counsellor/psychotherapist governed by the bacp.
